Would a wig less barrister be less effective? Why do qualified people have to look so ridiculous?

In this day and age why does England refuse to step fully into he 21st century? Royalty - marrying a divorcee is acceptable - possibly the same becoming queen appears to be acceptable. But there is a lot more which effects the commoner which is very objectionable!
