Neck pickup no sound? Les Paul?

About 2 weeks ago the neck pickup on my Les Paul copy guitar started cutting in and out. Going from high volume to little to no volume at all. I looked in the space on the other side of the volume/tone pots. One wire on the volume pot for this problem pickup wasn't hooked to anything. It seemed to me that every other pot had every wire connected. I assumed this was the problem. There was a small spot that appeared to have had this wire soldered to it at one point. So anyways I soldered it to that spot and now it doesn't just cut out, it's completely silent (at least since then....about 3 hours ago.) I would much rather fix it myself or have a friend look at it then line Guitarcenter's pockets. What are the most likely culprits?
