Finding out who hacked my Gmail?

My Gmail was "hacked" a little while ago. The culprit didn't touch a thing, but his IP address was registered under the "account activity." Now that I've got it, what can I do with it? Can I report him to the police? Anyway to see if that was a real IP and not a proxy?
