Is it essential to study law at university if you want to become a barrister?

I would have thought that it was preferable to say the least. You can also gain a law degree via the Open University, and I believe that you can start at the bottom in a law firm as a trainee solicitor with a view to qualifying. However if your ultimate ambition is to become a barrister then uni has to be the obvious route.
